February is Black History Month! Today, we are featuring more celebrated Black Americans:

Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician and NASA astronaut.  She became the first African-American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992.  After medical school and a brief general practice she served in the Peace Corp.  She has multiple doctoral degrees in science, and engineering and currently is the principal of the 100 Year Starship organization.

Her advice is “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.”

Madam C. J. Walker, was an African American entrepreneurphilanthropist, and a political and social activist. She was also the first female self-made millionaire in America, she became one of the wealthiest African American women in the country, "the world's most successful female entrepreneur of her time," and one of the most successful African-American business owners ever.  Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of beauty and hair products for black women through Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, which included the straightening comb and products for scalp ailments.

Quotes from famous African-Americans meant to inspire African-Americans and others to greatness….

  1. “Whatever we believe about ourselves and our ability comes true for us.”
—Susan L. Taylor, journalist Essence magazine
  2. “Defining myself, as opposed to being defined by others, is one of the most difficult challenges I face.” —Carol Moseley-Braun, politician and lawyer
