February is Black History Month! Today, we are featuring a couple of celebrated Black Americans:
Sarah Boone
(1832-1904) was an African American inventor who on April 26, 1892, obtained United States patent rights for her improvements to the ironing board. Boone's ironing board was designed to improve the quality of ironing sleeves and the bodies of women's garments. The board was very narrow, curved, and made of wood. The shape and structure allowed it to fit a sleeve and it was reversible, so one could iron both sides of the sleeve easily.

Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson Sr. (born September 18, 1951) is a retired American neurosurgeon, author, and politician who is the nominee to be the 17th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and was a candidate in the Republican Primary election for President in 2016.

In addition to his political endeavors he was the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland from 1984 until his retirement in 2013. As a pioneer in neurosurgery, Carson's achievements include performing the ONLY successful separation of conjoined twins joined at the back of the head, and pioneering the first successful neurosurgical procedure on a fetus inside the womb.

Quotes from famous African-Americans meant to inspire African-Americans and others to greatness….

  1. “In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.”  —Thurgood Marshall, first African American U.S. Supreme Court member
  2. “Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” —Coretta Scott King
