Welcome, Introductions and Approval of Agenda                             3:30-3:40pm

  • Looking at categorical funds (Title III-EL, Emergency Impact Aide, Title II Professional Development.  PD funds come through Site Council; they’re categorical.  Diamond Grants come through Site Council, too. 
  • All students with exception of Mieke Voges are new to Site Council.

SMHS Site Council By-Laws Update                                                  3:40-3:50pm

  • SPSA from WASC might be postponed while state figures out what to do with testing.
  • Testing Update.: STAR testing suspended; however, 10th Grade Life Science will be given, as will 11th grade EAP tests-English, Algebra II and HS Summative Math.  10th Graders will still take CAHSEE.
  • Bylaw Review 
  • Article 2: students get one vote per grade level, or ½ vote each.  Admin 3, Teachers 7, Parents 2 (According to by-laws, should have 4 parents), students “4”.  Teachers self-select, based on classroom duties, students are elected.
  • Article 3: officers.  Senior class council have, in past years, been the co-chairs. Yvonne will be Secretary.  Recorder will be rotated.
  • Article 4: We currently have no subcommittees. 
  • Article 5: Meetings.  Some conflicts noted. Meetings are posted on the school’s website.
  • Article 6: No current amendments

  • Motion by Mrs. Woolfolk, Seconded by Julie Scanlon.  Approved unanimously.  Senior class council: Seniors Samantha and Sam will co-chair. 
  • Recorder will be rotated, working with secretary, Yvonne.

SMHS Categorical Budgets                                                                4:00-4:10pm

  • Title III-Counselor has section that uses these funds
  • EIA Funds: are used for support staff in EL classrooms, family literacy and Latino Parent Coordinator stipends, after school tutors, HW center
  • Much of the money is already allocated, for support staff, etc.  This is FYI only.

  • All requests for PD fill in online form, submit to Site Council for review. 
  • Our first two:
    • Mr. Wilke is Assessment and Data TOSA, Ms Hwang ITC TOSA.  Admin meets with them frequently.  $35.00 per person, Smarter Balanced assessment training, preparation for our CCSS testing next year. 
    • Ms. Steinbrecher 350.00 to align world language and common core standards.  6 Saturdays at Stanford University. 
  • Motion by Mr. Norman, seconded by Tracey Freyre.  Approved unanimously
  • PD has $7000.00 for the year.  $350 and $35x 2 is not likely to be a problem.  Registrations are usually covered; subs come out of department days.
  • Spring usually has AVID, big PD request.  Cotober 1st deadline for overnight field trips involving students and for teachers who plan on spending at least two nights in a hotel.
  • Teachers are encouraged to submit requests; difficult with time out of class.
  • October 14 is PD Day, Common Core Academy.  Subject areas in morning, Departments in afternoon.  Tuesday is student min day.  BABA week, no tutorial on Tuesday, October 15.  Getting ready for testing; working with online testing—supposed to reduce guessing.  Looking at more critical writing. 

Update Diamond Grant application                                                   4:15-4:25pm

  • Do the dates work? Yes.  The fall one is good 11/18 meeting as is, the Spring one is moving up to the February 10 meeting; deadline 2/3.
  • $5000/year, $2500 per semester provided by the SMHSF. 

SPSA (Single Plan for Student Achievement)                                    4:25-4:45pm

  • Tenth grade tutorials: Junior Achievement is coming in to cover 7 tutorials, mostly Fridays, one Wednesday.
  • Career Day 11/1:  Was going to be schoolwide; now is for juniors and seniors, attending two sessions.  Job areas are electrician, design, dentists, CHP, video editor, etc—many.  Two twenty minute sessions.
  • Action Plan 1:  Careers:  Career Inventories, Career Day, JA
  • Action Plan 2:  Critical Thinking:  Still working—CT Swat
  • Action Plan 3: Underperforming, Motivation—freshman ambassadors, Osogatos, Family Literacy Night, MANA—working on increasing parent participation, dream club—undocumented students,
  • Equal opportunity Schools EOS—Seattle organization.  Recruiting and retaining underrepresented groups into AP/AS/H.  Teacher surveys—identifying students who are AP potential, student surveys.  Increasing number of AP offerings.   Schools piloting are Capuchino and Aragon.  Currently working on organizing surveys—Confidential, but not anonymous. 
  • Admin will be working on changes to SPSA and WASC action plans, then there will be more to work with, and it will go to board. 

New from Departments and Representatives                                  4:45-5:00pm

  • Senior class fundraising sort of, t-shirts are nearing.
  • Sophomores—roller rink fundraiser, Jeffrey’s fundraiser. 
  • Juniors—Pizza my heart, tpumps fundraiser.
  • Freshmen—no fundraisers yet.
  • PAC Grand opening 10/3 6-8
  • ELAC is supposed to have a representative here--English Language Advisory Committee—seldom here.  Need an ELAC parent for the district ELAC meeting.  Indoor soccer came out of ELAC
  • FC Night coming up-Sept 19th
  • Shadowing coming up.  Fridays.  Putting more into school flow.  Shadowing is an unexcused absence for middle school kids, so middle schools don’t promote it.  Getting Bowditch to promote school events  is tough.
